May is Mental Health Awareness Month: Things You Need to Know

At Little Words Project, we believe that kindness starts with loving yourself first. For that reason, we also believe that there’s nothing more important than caring for your mind and soul. And there’s no better time to do that than during Mental Health Awareness Month.

Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in May in the United States. It was started by the Mental Health America (MHA) organization.

Mental Health America uses the month of May to reach out to millions of people through the media, local events, and screenings, all to raise awareness and spread the word that mental health is important to everyone.

In addition to a heavy focus in May, we take a variety of steps throughout the year to ensure that mental health and related topics are spoken about and destigmatized. This month we’re taking a deep dive into how mental health impacts various groups in our communities. We’ve chatted with everyone from athletes to mothers to BIPOC individuals about why mental health matters to them.

For example, we recently surprised the UC Irvine women’s basketball team by visiting them at their school, gifting them bracelets, and sharing video footage from their families to cheer them up during the grind of the season.

And of course, you may notice a couple of other faces in the motherhood and mental health portions of the video: Little Words Project’s very own Lauren Bonfig and Adriana Carrig! It’s so important for moms to take care of their wellbeing and lean on their community for support. Gift your favorite Mama some Little Words to show her some love.

We also take great pride in our collaboration with The Loveland Foundation, an organization that raises funds to provide free therapy and mental wellness resources to black women and girls. Together, with your help, we raise funds year round to support this mission.
