In February 2021, my then fiancé (now husband) Dave and I heard the words no one wants to hear: "The biopsy came back as squamous cell carcinoma". Immediately through the shock and grief, we knew Dave had to go to Dana-Farber to get the world class care he needed to beat this. After two weeks of appointments, planning, finding a place in Boston (the city we JUST moved from), and getting married, Dave was operated on March 8. His skilled surgeons removed the tumor from his tongue and 55 lymph nodes then successfully rebuilt his tongue with parts of his forearm. Pathology confirmed one of our biggest fears, the cancer was stage four.

Four weeks later, Dave began aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatment. A painful battle for him, and a heartbreaking one for me, watching my new husband suffer so horribly. Making it even harder, due to COVID restrictions Dave had to go through all of his infusions and treatments alone. In August 2021, we heard those magic words "No evidence of disease" and now over a year later Dave is still cancer free.

Dana- Farber is the reason I am a wife, not a widow. Their world class team of doctors allowed Dave to get the best care possible AND their researchers are making strides in cancer prevention, treatment, and remission. I run not only honor my Dave, but for the thousands of people whose lives have been changed by cancer. 26.2 miles is nothing compared to these battles, all hard fought, and some prematurely ended.

In honor of Dave and every Dana-Farber family, I ask that you please give to my fundraiser as generously as your means allow (and don't forget to see if your employer matches gifts!). We are all grateful for your support!

See you on Bolyston St,

Kellie

A word from Dana-Farber:

In 2023, hundreds of Dana-Farber runners will take to the streets to participate in the 127th Boston Marathon®. The Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team runs and raises funds with thousands of special people in mind. From Hopkinton to Boston, we carry thoughts of those people every step of the way.
One hundred percent of every dollar raised by the DFMC team supports the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. These funds are fueling some of today's most promising basic cancer research.
